ABSTRACT:
A Ham Sandwich a Day Keeps the Pain Away
This poster reviews a case study of a hospice patient on controlled medications to care for his pain. This patient was a young man, only of the age of 35, who was in CHF and only had less than 6 months to live. He only lived for a couple of weeks after being put on hospice. Due to this patients high pain tolerance and pain demand needs, this patient was on scheduled Haldol, Ativan, and Morphine, what many hospice nurses know as a HAM sandwich. This presentation reviews the patients presentation and background, as well as uses evidenced based practice to view the terminally ill hospice patient's pain management through this patient.
