A new way of mapping peatlands

ABSTRACT
Regardless of their increasingly known importance, peatlands are currently under pressure by people and their needs – ultimately leading to their destruction. To prevent this and facilitate towards a more sustainable peatland management, we need an efficient and accurate way of mapping them. Unfortunately, current ways of doing so are both laboursome and time-consuming, and therefore not applicable for larger areas. They also often fail at identifying peat underlying other vegetation not commonly associated with peatlands. However, using remotely sensed- and radiometric data in combination to model peat depth, as an alternate to traditional methods have lately shown promising results.
